According to legend, the creation of gooey butter cake was actually an accident. Apparently, it came about when a St. Louis baker added the wrong proportions of ingredients to his coffee cake, resulting in a cake with gooey, pudding-like center. Although no one really knows how gooey butter cake came to be, if that story is true, here at Gooey Louie we couldn’t be happier about that baker’s mistake, because without it, we wouldn’t be in business today!
Gooey Louie got its start in the fall of 2006 during the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Best of Missouri Market. We’d baked hundreds of cakes for friends and family over the years and decided it was time to share our cakes with the world! Our gooey butter cakes were a hit, so we decided to make Gooey Louie our full-time job.
Stop by our family-owned gooey butter cake bakery and see how we hand-make each cake—just like grandma used to make it! (Actually, grandma used boxed cake to make her gooey butter cakes, but we think she would approve of our upgrade to hand-made).
We only use the finest, all-natural ingredients in our cakes. In fact, Gooey Louie is the only gooey butter cake you’ll find at Whole Foods Market at the Town and Country and Brentwood locations.
Butter, farm-fresh eggs, flour, granulated sugar, confectioners’ sugar, baking powder, pure vanilla extract
The additional ingredients added to our flavored cakes may not be all-natural. However, we work hard to use natural flavoring and ingredients in our flavored caked whenever possible.
